Sort of; I'll explain. The solution that was implemented is fine;
I had just chosen to extend the semantics to cover an additional
case. In the check for whether the file is writable, if it doesn't
exist, I checked instead whether the file could probably (no
guarantee--not atomic) be created. That's not strictly necessary,
though.
But my wish for error messages in other failure cases, which would
have made it easier to debug this problem, does remain. I provided
some in my original patch.
