Hrm. Yes, you are right in that persistent handles need to be allocated
using malloc() because they need to span requests and should therefore not
be using memory from PHP's memory manager.
One interesting clue you had before was that filename pointer getting
wiped out. It might be interesting to single-step through the code and
watch that pointer to see when it gets wiped out. It looks like something
is stepping all over memory somewhere.
