Right. I believe this is the cause of my recent bug report:

These a workaround in the bug report provided by Lars Torben Wilson
which appears to work alright for now, but it's still wrong.

When I last looked at fixing this at the xml_set_object level, it
basically appeared like the IS_STRING stuff needed to go, and
call_user_func needed to be used instead. That's from a vague memory,
however, with a lack of internal PHP / Zend knowledge to boot.
