Henryk Plötz (HenrykPloetz@gmx.de) was kind enough to confirm this bug for me.
Here is his message
-------------------
I've encountered this same problem myself and it seems to be a general issue with PHP4 and
ErrorDocuments.
I've tried it under Linux kernel 2.2.14 with Apache 1.3.12 and PHP 4.0.1pl2 as well as with
SunOS 5.7, Apache 1.3.12 and PHP 4.0.0.
When specifying an ErrorDocument to be parsed by PHP the returned HTTP-Status-Code is changed to 200
OK regardless of its previous value.
This causes the browser to not display any password dialogue.
The same happens with every other Status-Code (I've tried 401, 404 and 500) which all end up to
be sent and logged as 200 OK.
