PHP with WAP

Hi, I was trying to use input fields from .wml. I currently have a .wml page that works with php format. However, when input is submitted, the value gets to next <card> as $(fname) and and i can't seem to use that value with in my mysql_query function. Is there some work around for this? Thanks.
