Yes, putting a ".:" in the path works, but that's not the point. The point
is simply a backward compatibility one. It should work without the "."
because it did before. If the behavior is to be changed, it should be
announced, either by producing a more informative error message (preferred)
and/or be put in the incompatibility section of the announcements.
