I just noticed that bug ID #6276 was filed last week suggesting adding functionality to parse_str() to return the results into an array. I have already submitted a patch in the form of bug ID #5768 that does this. It is a patch against 4.0.1pl2. Please take a look at this patch, as I believe it will do everything you want. I have been using this patch (as well as an older PHP 3 version of it) for over eight months in a production environment with no problems.
