If you use --with-gd=/compile/gd
Then it looks for /compile/gd/include/gd.h and /compile/gd/lib/libgd.a
If you do not have your files in directories like this it won't work.
Most people will copy their libgd.a file to /usr/local/lib and their *.h
files to /usr/local/include, but on some systems it might be /opt/local or
even a user's own local folder in which case the format of this --with-gd
switch is useful.
