Comments:
I've got a very strong hunch that the segfault happened actually when you were
trying to use a non-existent connection, not in the connection phase itself.
This could happen in 4.0.1pl2 and is fixed in 4.0.2. Please upgrade and re-open if
there is still a problem. Shouldn't, I can't verify this happening anymore.

If postmaster isn't running on the server, the http daemon
segfaults when trying to access the db it using pg_connect();
I used the postgresql rpms available from www.postgresql.org.
The psql binary from the postgresql dist. does not segfault when
trying to open a connection to a server that does not exists, so i figure the
problem must be somewhere in the php module.
