On second hand, still thanks, but the problem is more complex.
I cannot find any of the POST variables in phpinfo() upon a 404 directive. I
assume they _are_ available since the HTTP request header information shows
a content length and tells me REDIRECT_REQUEST_METHOD was POST, it's just
not clear how to retrieve the data.
So perhaps HTTP_REDIRECT_POST_VARS[] would still be handy.
