compiling static libraries into php extensions

I'm fairly unfamiliar with how .m4 files work, and I'm writing an extension to
PHP and want to link in a static library. How do I do this? I've figured
out how to link in shared libaries but for various ease-of-use reasons I prefer
to link one particular library in statically.
