You may have seen traffic on the qa list over the last few weeks regarding the Windows installer for PHP I've been working on. I made the installer available to the qa group for testing about a week ago and have also circulated the software amongst colleagues for testing on a variety of platforms. No problems have come to light so far. The installer doesn't do any rocket science, but it does provide a familiar means of installation for Windows users, and takes just about all of the effort out of installing a basic PHP system under IIS and PWS, and only leaves server configuration to the user for Apache and other web servers. In due course, the installer can be enhanced to include extension dlls (at the expense of greatly increasing the size of the download) and support for configuring httpd.conf and its equivalent on other servers. However, as it stands, I believe the installer does a good job for the majority of Windows users. You can currently download installer from http://www.dialsolutions.com/phil/php/SETUP.EXE I'll update the installer from 4.0.3 to pl1 as soon as I get hold of a Windows binary. I'd like to see the installer become available as one of the Windows download options on www.php.net. Do people think this is a good idea, and if so, what do we have to do to make it happen.
I think it's a great idea. Right now, Daniel Beulshausen prepares the Windows builds that are distributed on www.php.net. I guess we need to form some sort of a release process, where he builds the distribution, passes it on to you, and you wrap it up in the installer. Unless preparing the installation package is something you can teach him to do..? I think it'd be best if you talk directly and decide how to go about this :) Thanks a lot for the efforts!
