Do you use linux? Could you then try to load php with LD_PRELOAD=libpthread.so? Does it help?
If it does then that is the same problem php has (due to bugs in glibc) with mod_php+oci8 and apache
core dumps on startup.
I had the similar problem and as a workaround I have built the standalone php with
EXTRA_LIBS=-lpthread option.
It works for me.
