Comments:
This is not a PHP issue. $REMOTE_USER is a variable that PHP reads from the environment of the
hosting web server.
The reason that it's not being set for "higher" directories, is that the
authentication works on against a directory-and-below, not across the entire site (if the password
is not required at /). When it's not required, the browser doesn't send it, so the server
doesn't have it to pass onto PHP.

Hi ,
After logon through protected directories the environment variable
HTTP_SERVER_VARS["REMOTE_USER"] is set with the given user name at http access logon.
But when the application move up to others directories the environment
HTTP_SERVER_VARS["REMOTE_USER"] disappear !
After comming back through the protected directories ( from the same sesion ) without login again
the related environment HTTP_SERVER_VARS["REMOTE_USER"] appear again.
Should i see the HTTP_SERVER_VARS["REMOTE_USER"] after the first logon in all directories
until the session get close.
I think that is a bug because it is the way you to known if your user already logon.
Regards ,
Yossi Kimron
