This errata note has been bugging me.
It explicitly states that the documentation is, well, intentionally
wrong.
Is returning references from a function _supposed_ to use:

function &returns_reference() {
return &$someref;
}
$newref = &returns_reference()
------------
OR:
------------
function &returns_reference() {
return $someref;
}
$newref = &returns_reference()
