It is working, but I did not compile mysql. I downloaded everything (apache, perl_mod, php) afresh, cleaned the directories, and restarted from scratch. Then, I did not get the error. It's a curious thing, but I don't think I want to ask about the past. Thanks for your help, even if I remain ignorant of the causes for the problem.
