returning two-dimensional array with Api

Hi, i want to do a function like array() wich return a two-dimensional array. I've searched in array.c to understand how does the Api works. zend_hash_update returns a one dimensional array and Array() function 'is a language construct used to represent literal arrays, and not a regular function'...
