No, the MySQL server is threaded. Having a threaded client library is
only useful for threaded client applications. PHP is not threaded, so
there is absolutely no difference when it comes to PHP.

Yes, you could try that too and it should work, but there is no technical
reason to use a pthread-linked mysql client library with PHP.
