From now on, you can only pass *variables* by reference. Other forms of expressions (e.g., the return value of a function that returns a value by reference, or the return value of 'new foo') *cannot* be passed by reference. It was allowed in previous versions of PHP 4.0, but could cause data corruption. We may get back to this in a future major version of the engine (1.1).
ok. then there is still one issue
this worked in all (my) cases before. Me (maybe 0<=x<=inf others) don´t want to change lots of code if a new release of the engine re-enables us to do things like before (btw, estimated time until engine (1.1)? soon, later, far later, maybe in x months? - if it´s a huge span I´ll have to change my code unfortunately)
so, can you please send the .diff which reactivates that functionality (maybe others will request it too)
Right, but then again, this never worked properly either. This patch is
the only patch that is *definitely* here to stay, because it fixes data
corruption (as opposed to the other patches, which 'only' attempt to fix
an unexpected behavior).
no doubt, bug 7515 is unexpected behaviour which is data corruption ;)
