The main reason why you cannot install WDDX as a shared
module is that I didn't want to open this can of worms.

You use phpize like autoconf--to build the configure
framework for a self-contained extension. The concept of APXS
is quite different. Parts of APXS (querying build settings)
are found in php-config. That script is used by configure to
figure out build details.
