That is a harmless warning (we have multiple C++ checks in
the system).

I just tried it here:
$ grep CXX config_vars.mk
CXX = c++
CXXFLAGS = -g -O2
CXX_PHP_COMPILE = $(CXX_COMPILE) -c $< && touch $@
> PHP_REQUIRE_CXX()
Does it work, if you remove the () ?
