I think TeX is doing something wrong here. If I use a German TeX and
generate the PDF file it makes on every ocurrence of '"a' a 'ä'. In the
English version every ocurrence of '-', '--', and '---' will be shown
as
one '-'. Two '-' should look a little bit wider as one '-'.
