Missed from the first explanation: PHP crashes if MySQL is not running (this is the error in
mysql_connect).

PHP crashes when an error occurs. A test program for
this:
<?php
mysql_connect("localhost","catalog","catalog");
?>
error_reporting is on
track_errors is on
log_errors is off
I have seen that Zeev done something in main.c doing this :(
There is no hangup, if I disable error_reporting, ex.:
@mysql_connect("localhost","catalog","catalog");
