It has to do with how objects are implemented, and the way the reference counting mechanism works. Simply put - (1) objects will always be references, and other data types will usually not be references (2) Passing references by reference is quicker than not, passing non-reference by reference is slower than not I don't understand why this is the case. If you have a huge array and pass it by value you need to copy the hole array.
