Of course it can. If you take the address of a function which
has been marked as ``inline'' (note that it is only a hint to
the compiler), the compiler will generate a function with
static storage duration and take the address of that
function.
If a function is not marked as inline and GCC chooses to
optimize it, I'd guess that it does exactly the same thing.
