Thanks for your reply. Both issues You mentioned are fixed now (I hope :)).
The function now checks are there any 8 bit characters in the string. If no, the
initial string is returned. Else encoded string.
I've also caught a bug which could lead to segfault and fixed it.
The reworked version is attached.
