What was the FULL configure line you have used?
And what was in the config.log (in the end) ?

If you have RedHat distribution and compile php4 with DOM XML, MUST be
installed package zlib-devel...
Without this package ./configure --with-dom finish with error : DOM
module requires libxml >= 2.0.
(libxml2 installed, tested with 2.2.3 and 2.2.10)
