Assuming the path to zlib is known:
AC_CHECK_LIB(mysqlclient, mysql_init, [
dnl if it works, no need for adding zlib
dnl as it is already added, or not needed.

LIBS="$LIBS -L$zlib_path -lz"
AC_CHECK_LIB(mysqlclient, mysql_init, [
dnl if this works, add zlib
