Also you should use --activate-module=src/modules/php4/libphp4.a. Not --add-module. If not that then try this; in apache 1.3.14 alloc.h is now ap_alloc.h. Modify the src/modules/php/Makefile and change alloc.h to ap_alloc.h. Well at least this is what solved my problem with 1.3.14 and mod-auth-mysql. I don't know if it is the same issue with php.
