Patching php-4.0.1pl2

I've been trying to compile php-4.0.1pl2 on a Solaris 8 machine and it kept hanging compiling configuration-parser.c. I reliase that there have been bugs raised about this but I never saw the *actual* solution. After some web hunting I guessed at removing all the #line directives from configuration-scanner.c and configuration-parser.c which seems to help compilation along. My question is since my hands are tied re: upgrading to a more recent version will the above changes break anything other than debugging?
