This was using odbc_fetch_row. Exactly the same code accessing a table from a query works fine.

Did you use odbc_fetch_row() / odbc_fetch_into()?

after calling odbc_tables(), the result contains the same row repeated for every row of the result.
Calling odbc_result_all() does work however.
