Either I'm so tired that I'm missing the joke, or....????
[root@perseus /root]# rpm -q netscape-navigator
netscape-navigator-4.76-0.6.2
[root@perseus /root]# rpm -q netscape-communicator
netscape-communicator-4.76-0.6.2
4.08 is absolutely *ancient*..... (I think it would be a nice idea to
support it, though). If you're only surfing Netscape's web
pages to get "Navigator" downloads, "4.08" is, indeed, what
they offer for old Win32, but it's most certainly *not* the
current version of their web browsing product. For MacOS, they
only offer "3.04" in the "Navigator" brand. (really, same support
issue for OSF/1).... Tru64 Unix is 4.76. Solaris 2.4 is 4.76.
Linux 2.2 is 4.76. BSDi is 4.75. SunOS is 4.61 (yes, even crufty SunOS
has more recent support). FreeBSD is 4.76. HP/UX 10.20 is 4.76.
4.76 is pretty much their stable web browsing family.
The reason, I think, for the older listed versions on the "mainstream
platforms" is simple, to those encourage users to upgrade to a modern-ish
browser, to use their browser/email/news combo software. If they
have some sort of holy-war issues with an email client in their
browser software, there's not a lot of motivation for netscape
to fix it. They started updating their software on the mainstream
platforms forst, which is why they lost the "Navigator" name earlier.
I'm surprised they maintained that brand as long as they have,
as they pretty much killed the "Navigator, it's a Browser only"
product line a while ago. The current release family is 6.x on
MacOS and Win32.
