Not really a code issue, more an OS issue I think. On slackware doing, $fd=fsockopen("www.somewhere.com",80); if(!$fd) { echo "www.somewhere.com is not in /etc/hosts"; } $fd=fsockopen("176.54.25.15",80); <--- made up ip if(!$fd) { echo " you will never see this echo"; } But on Redhat, this would work either way.
