Not to hold anybody back, considering the amount of work invested in the
php3 source tree, I think it'd be more than fair to share the situation of
the php4 source tree with you all.
The php4 source tree branched away from php3 at version 3.0.5. When 3.0.6
went out, Zend was young enough so that it had no real implications on the
surrounding php4 code, so patching in the diffs was doable, and I did it.
I can tell you now that this isn't the case with 3.0.7, since the
implementation of Zend has now changed *a lot* of the wrapper code in PHP.
Some of the patches 3.0.7 offers are irrelevant, some would have to be
implemented in a different way, and of course, some of them can be applied
fairly easily. However, when the php4 source tree goes online (which
should happen very soon now, in a limited fashion for major developers in
the initial phase), you'd fine a 3.0.6-equivalent version, without all of
your patches applied since.
IMO, unnecessary changes (i.e., anything except for bug fixes) should
probably delayed for a few weeks, so that it can be applied to the new
source tree. Applying the changes from 3.0.6 to 3.0.7 will have to be done
pretty much by hand, using the good old grey cells a lot instead of the
patch utility.
By the way, Zend's no longer 'vapourware', you can see it at work at
http://netstorm.netvision.net.il:8080/ (which
is a mirror of the PHP web
site, run by the Zend-enabled version of PHP).
