It has been stated on the list that curl can only grab to a file, not
to php variable. Is that (still?) the case?

Complete support for the OpenSSL API, including support for:
fopen("https://example.com/", "r")
would be a great feature to have.
(As would -- perhaps optionally -- a more complete HTTP client
implementation for fopen().)
