Just a quick note here. I installed vmware (www.vmware.com) today on my
Linux box and it is incredible! I can now use Office97 in Linux and it
works infinitely better than Wine. The only Windows programs that do not
work very well are ones that need DirectX/DirectDraw, but these tend to be
video games anyway. Have a look at http://linux.lerdorf.on.ca/snap1.gif -
snap7.gif for some snapshots. For some reason ksnapshot makes slightly
grainy snapshots. I guess because it is dithering down from 32bpp to
8bpp. snap7.gif is especially interesting. It shows Adobe Photoshop 5.0
running side-by-side with Gimp 1.0.
Another nifty thing I am able to do is run both Apache+PHP on Windows at
the same time as Apache+PHP on Linux. And yes, MSVC6 runs as well so I
can compile PHP on both Linux and Win98 concurrently. It is so fast that
I am actually finding myself using IE4 in the virtual machine window
instead of the native Linux Netscape because I find the Windows fonts more
readable. And since the vm window has its own ip I can now finally play
with odbc and sybase-ct and some of the other things that need both a
Linux box and a Windows box at the same time.
Another nifty thing is that a vm can run any OS. Virtual hosting using
this thing with many vm's each running an instance of Linux would be
extremely cool. In fact, a single Linux box can run at least 128 separate
vm's. And each one is completely separate. That means that someone could
telnet into a Linux vm, recompile his kernel and reboot and it would work.
Other vm's on that machine would not be affected. In fact the other vm's
could each be running a different OS. Freebsd, WinNT, BeOS, OpenBSD,
BSDi, etc. All on one box.
A small test here. You can browse to http://linux.lerdorf.on.ca and you
will be hitting my Linux box. But, you can also bring up
http://collective.lerdorf.on.ca and you will be
hitting a virtual machine
running Win98 and ApacheNT. Separate IP's, separate OS's, same machine.
Too cool!
Try it!
