I have reimplemented the socket backend functions for fgets() and fread().
They were using single-byte recv() calls. At 10 requests per second each
trying to fetch 3k through a socket, it ended up trying to do 30000 system
calls per second. Very Painful!
It seems to work fine on Solaris, Linux and FreeBSD, but I'm not sure if
the new version works on Windows. Could someone please test it?
