Control freaks and people writing code for distribution are the same people who can cope with calling get_magic_quotes_gpc() and making their code work. One of the main ideas behind PHP is to make it easy for new users without limiting more experienced users. Occasionally inconveniencing the experienced users is unavoidable in certain cases. -Rasmus
