Forgive me if I've missed the point here, but as a Windows user I haven't
yet played with PEAR.
Everyone seems to be talking about a PEAR engine which runs on client
machines. Surely it should run on
pear.php.net and essentially replace the current downloads page.
A new user selects their platform and server and whatever modules they
require over and above whatever we decide is the 'baseline' installation.
Windows users can choose between source and binary for the items which are
not written in php. The pear engine puts the required bits together and
sends them to the client with either a suitable script to configure, build
and install the selected stuff, or a suitably configured installsheild type
thing for the Windows users. A 'special' file is also installed which
describes the installation so that when the user goes back to pear to
request additional modules, dependencies etc can be sorted out by the user
being asked to upload the 'special' file.
Since the thing doesn't need to run on the client's machine it can be
written entirely in php.
Cheers
