try:
$c =& (true)? $a: $b;
might work better. Havnt tested it though.

$a = 'foo';
$b = 'bar';
$c = (true) ? &$a : &$b;
=> syntax error, have to do
if (true) {
$c = &$a;
} else {
$c = &$b;
}
would be nice :)
