Changing value of string passed by reference

Hi, I am developing a PHP3-wrapper for at credit card clearing system which will be released later this week (LGPL'ed). I need to pass a string by reference, and modify the contents, by it is not clear to me exactly what I have to do to make it work. Does anyone have an example of how to do this correctly?
