Doesn't segfault for me with PHP 4.0.6RC4 but I get
this into error_log:
---------------------------------------
./zend_execute.c(285) : Block 0x40A4C063 status:
Beginning: Overrun (magic=0x676E6972, expected=0x7312F8DC)
End: Unknown

manipulating an array like this will make apache segfault:
$array[0] = "x";
$array = $array[0];
$array[0] = $array[1];
tested in 4.0.5, 4.0.4pl1 and 4.0.3pl1... all segfault
