Thies, I am not quite sure how many places need to be changed for this. On a whole, moving to enum's is something I've wanted to do for a long time but never had the time to do. If you're up to it maybe you can create a patch which we can look at. I suggest only trying to make the IS_OBJECT/IS_ARRAY #define's work and see how much work it ends up being.
