oh my fault then - sorry for this.

well - /usr/bin/dirname says otherwise:
[fuf@fuf ~/]$ dirname file.ext returns
.
[fuf@fuf ~/]$
whereas php's dirname():
echo dirname("file.ext"); returns
file.ext
in my opinion php's dirname behaviour is wrong.
