(excuse in advance for the long snips of code)
First, "make clean" seems buggy:
cmv@euclid:~/php3> make clean
rm -f libphp3.a libmodphp3.a libphp3.so libmodphp3-so.a php *.o
rm -f functions/adabasd.o functions/aspell.o functions/apache.o
functions/fhttpd.o functions/basic_functions.o functions/crypt.o fuc
rm -f test/php.desc test/php.in test/php.out test/php.test
rm -f test/a.tmp test/b.tmp test/test.dbm*
(cd dbase; make clean)
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/cmv/php3/dbase'
rm -f *.o *.a
rm -f errs output *~ tg.out rw_*.list core
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/cmv/php3/dbase'
(cd pcrelib; make clean)
make[1]: Entering directory `/home/cmv/php3/pcrelib'
make[1]: *** No rule to make target `clean'. Stop.
make[1]: Leaving directory `/home/cmv/php3/pcrelib'
make: *** [clean] Error 2
Second, the pcrelib functions seem to want to compile in automagically,
and then fail 'cuz I don't have it/them installed (?):
cmv@euclid:~/php3>
./configure --enable-track-vars --disable-magic-quotes --with-mysql --with-x
ml --with-zlib
<...snip>
checking whether to include PCRE support... yes
updating cache ./config.cache
creating ./config.status
creating Makefile
creating build-defs.h
creating stamp-h
creating libphp3.module
creating doc/Makefile
creating doc/version.ent
creating doc/checkdoc
creating doc/html.dsl
creating doc/print.dsl
creating doc/phpweb.dsl
creating extra/gd/bdf2gdfont
creating regex/Makefile
creating pcrelib/Makefile
sed: can't read ./pcrelib/Makefile.in: No such file or directory
creating dbase/Makefile
creating config.h
config.h is unchanged

in your web space, users may be able to circumvent existing
