Passing Variables From One PHP page to another

For some reason I cannot pass variables from one PHP page to another. I
cannot figure out what I am going wrong.
PHP_page1
session_start();
$test="help";
session_register("test");
PHP_page2
echo session_register("test");
When I echo session_register("test"), nothing displays. Why?
