problems with ereg()

whenever i use ereg() in my script, it takes a parser incredibly long time
to return a result (aprox. 30 sec) - i didn't have such problems testing my
scripts on the same computer with rh7
i have newly installed red hat 7.1 with php 4.0.4 - i nstalled php 4.0.6 and
the problem didn't disapear - can anybody suggest me what is the problem
with this ereg()
