FYI,

I use
ltmain.sh (GNU libtool) 1.4 (1.920 2001/04/24 23:26:18)
on one machine, and
ltmain.sh (GNU libtool) 1.4.2 (1.922.2.53 2001/09/11 03:18:52)
on the other.

Downgrading to 1.3.3 did not solve the problem:
ltmain.sh (GNU libtool) 1.3.3 (1.385.2.181 1999/07/02 15:49:11)

I'm trying further...
