Operating system: solaris 8(sparc)
PHP version:      4.0.6
PHP Bug Type:     Compile Failure
Bug description:  configure claims it cannot find libgd (so|a) -> but it is there

solaris box .. filled with gnu stuff. gcc,gnu linker and gnu make. 

compiled gd-2.0.1 (i need the  truecolor image function
imagecreatetruecolor)
when i use 

--with-gd=/usr/local/lib 

configure ends with an error that it cannot find libgd.(so|a). 
but both libgd.a and libgd.so are there. 

i tried to modify the configure script but failed.
