You cannot. For a shared library you need position independent
code which is usually not available in static libraries.
Generally, if you want to use APXS, you need shared versions of
all involved libraries.
For gd, you might try the version from
http://sasweb.de/gd-1.3-modern.tar.gz
which uses libtool to generate a shared library, too. It also has
autoconf/automake support.
